Let’s get this out of the way first: You are not lazy. You are not falling behind.
You are not doing summer “wrong” just because your to-do list looks a little…lighter.
Summer shifts everything–our schedules, our energy, even our priorities. And rather than resist it or try to muscle through with your usual January-level intensity, what if you met the season with intention and flexibility?
This is your permission slip to build a system that bends. One that gives you room to breathe, move slower, travel, rest, play–and still feel aligned with your goals.
Here’s how we recommend designing a summer system that works with you, not against you:
Reevaluate what “productive” means right now.
Productivity in July doesn’t have to look like productivity in March.
• Maybe it’s wrapping up by 3:00 p.m. instead of 5:00.
• Maybe it’s saying no to back-to-back meetings and yes to uninterrupted focus blocks.
• Maybe it’s a big-picture planning month instead of a high-output month.
Give yourself the freedom to zoom out and ask: What actually needs to happen this season? Not everything does.
Swap rigidity for rhythm.
Instead of trying to copy-paste your regular routine, experiment with a seasonal rhythm.
For example:
- Mondays: Deep work before noon, admin in the afternoon
- Tuesdays/Thursdays: Lighter days or summer hours
- Fridays: Off entirely or set aside for creative projects
You still have structure, you’re just letting it breathe.
Design around how you feel, not just what’s on the calendar.
Your energy likely fluctuates more during the summer, and that’s okay. Design a system that flexes with it.
Try:
• Starting earlier to take advantage of cool, quiet mornings
• Building in 15-minute “sunshine breaks”
• Creating buffer days after travel or long weekends
• Blocking time for rest on purpose, not as an afterthought
Your capacity isn’t static, and your system shouldn’t be either.
Use summer as a reset, not a pause.
It’s tempting to let everything go and say, “I’ll pick this back up in the fall.” But summer can actually be a powerful reset–a time to reflect, recalibrate, and refine.
Ask yourself:
- What’s working in my current system?
- What’s feeling forced or outdated?
- What can I do now to set myself up for a strong fall?
You don’t have to be “on” to move forward. You just need to be present.
Make space for joy–on purpose.
This might be the most important part.
We believe your life isn’t meant to revolve around your work–it’s meant to include it. So let summer remind you of the full picture: the spontaneous day trips, the park lunches, the bare feet in the backyard.
You don’t have to earn rest. Or joy. Or sunshine.
But you can design your summer system to make space for all of it.
The bottom line:
Summer isn’t a detour–it’s part of the journey.
Design your system to reflect this season, not the one you think you “should” be in.
